On October 7, 2017, 100 guests gathered at one of Vancouver’s most unique and elegant event venues to celebrate the wedding of Jamie Niessen and Cam Mowat.
“Jamie and Cam both work in finance so when it came time to choose a wedding venue, they gravitated to The Permanent, a historic bank-building-turned-event-space in Vancouver’s Gastown neighbourhood,” explains Railtown Catering Event Sales Manager Ashley Szczepaniak, who worked closely with the couple throughout the wedding planning process. Named after the BC Permanent & Loan Company, the 100-year-old heritage building was later home to the Bank of Canada. Following a recent restoration project, the landmark building is now a chic, contemporary event venue that features striking neoclassical architectural details such as the original bank vault door – a dramatic and sentimental backdrop for Jamie and Cam to say ‘I Do’.
The team from Railtown Catering worked in tandem with day-of coordinator Olivia Woolwich from DreamGroup Productions to assist with on-site set up, service and execution. Upon arrival at the venue, guests were treated to signature cocktails before the ceremony. “The his and hers cocktails were a big hit,” Ashley recalls. “We offered Jimmy Spritz for her (gin and tonic with blood orange and mint) and cans of PBR for him.” During the cocktail hour, guests enjoyed a selection of passed canapés such as beef short rib with gruyère grilled cheese; classic bruschetta topped with tomato, garlic, shallot, basil; ‘nduja, prawn with red onion, cilantro, grilled focaccia; and albacore niçoise potato with haricot vert, olive, cured yolk.
Following the ceremony, Jamie and Cam walked down their aisle together with their signature drinks in hand. From there, the stained-glass atrium was quickly transformed into an elegant dining room with three long communal tables decked in lush greenery, simple white pillar candles and gilded lanterns. “Fine details were woven seamlessly through the day to create an effortlessly elegant event,” Ashley explains. The venue was adorned with intricate floral arrangements provided by Floralista, while sophisticated gold chairs and geometric table lanterns complemented the heritage building’s stained-glass ceiling and bronze chandeliers.
Ashley and the Railtown Catering team collaborated with Jamie and Cam to create a personalized food and drink menu from start to finish. “The couple lives above the Railtown Cafe location on Main Street, so they were already familiar with the brand before we started working together,” Ashley recalls. Following a series of site visits and tastings, the Railtown Catering put together a bespoke family-style menu featuring large sharing plates of charred Caesar salad, whole roasted free-range chicken with oyster mushrooms and blanquette sauce, beef short rib with fondant potato, roasted autumn vegetables, and penne amatriciana with guanciale, tomato and chili. For dessert, guests were invited to help themselves to a tasty treat from the whimsical doughnut wall, which featured sweet handcrafted doughnuts supplied by Cartems Donuterie.
“We loved working with Railtown,” says Jamie of the couple’s experience working with the Vancouver-based catering team. “They were professional, responsive, and the food was one of the highlights of our wedding – the beef short rib and fondant potatoes were whoa mama!”
Once fully satiated, guests took to the dance floor to party the night away with a soundtrack provided by Vancouver-based DJ Girl on Wax. The party was fueled with late-night snacks of soft pretzels with cheese dip and vintage glass bottles of Diet Coke.
“We would absolutely recommend Railtown Catering and especially Ashley,” Jamie says. “She made the planning process simple and fun.”
